Amanda Bailey, ACNP-BC, CWS, CPSN, ISPAN - F

The International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN) has a mission to promote the education, competency, and professional development of the Plastic and Aesthetic Nurse. As we journey into 2020, let our vision for the purpose be 20/20 as well. Let us not be myopic: lacking imagination, foresight, or intellectual insight. We are in a time when we must expand, albeit no matter how uncomfortable. Let us grow, no matter the pains. More

Plastic Surgical Nurses Foundation (PSNF) Grants

Kristi Elliott, RN, FNP-C, CPSN
Secretary - Treasurer

It's not too early to start planning for this year's meeting in San Mateo, California. Meeting and travel expenses can add up quickly. Did you know that the Plastic Surgical Nurses Foundation (PSNF) offers grants that can help defray your testing or meeting costs? Each year several grants are awarded to members to take the CPSN, and CANS review courses and exams. Professional Development grants are also available to offset meeting registration fees. The application process is simple and can be found on the ISPAN website under the Foundation tab. Applications aren't open yet, but watch your email for an announcement as the meeting gets closer.

So you've already taken your exam, or your employer covers your meeting costs? Now is a great time to make a tax-deductible donation to the PSNF. Their mission is to foster the professional growth of plastic and aesthetic nursing by raising and disseminating funding for educational and research activities to further advance the care of our patients. All funding is via donation, and yours could mean the difference in whether one of our colleagues can test or attend the meeting this year.

Social Media Social media, love it or hate it, it is fair to say that it is here to stay! So how can we use it to maximize our businesses or practices? Some of the benefits of using social media in the health care setting include: quick dissemination of medical and health information, provide a cost-effective way to promote messages, mainstream media reach, communicate in times of crisis, and tweet/video live procedures. Social media also allows you to reach a large group of people searching for your specific service(s). It provides a direct connection to your audience. It can build your brand with your organic content and bring people to your website. More

Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an anti-fibrinolytic agent that helps to reduce intra-operative bleeding and the need for blood transfusions.1,2 Its use in cardiac, orthopedic and trauma surgery is well documented. On the other hand, its use in plastic surgery is less studied as the blood loss in most plastic surgical procedures is minimal. There is evidence that suggests there are some additional benefits specific to plastic surgery. These include a cleaner surgical field, less postoperative inflammation, bruising and swelling.1,2 More

The World Health Organization (WHO) has dedicated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife The World Health Organization (WHO) has dedicated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. This is the year to celebrate you! Nursing can take a toll on us mentally, physically and emotionally. Nurse burnout is causing nurses to leave in alarming numbers. If we are unable to retain nurses, how will we be able to recruit new nurses? One way to cope with work stress is to practice self-care. If we do not partake in self-care, we are doing a disservice to our patients and families. Nurse theorist Dr. Jean Watson writes about practicing loving-kindness to self and others as part of her 10 Caritas Processes. For many years, working out was my way of practicing self-care. More

With the new decade of the '20s now upon us, I have committed to simplifying my life With the new decade of the '20s now upon us, I have committed to simplifying my life. This decision came about as I was pondering the proverbial "new year" resolution. During this resolute thought process, I concluded the reason I needed a resolve was the feeling of being suffocated from all the "stuff" that I have accumulated over the years and the busyness of so many activities. Once I identified the root cause of my stifled feelings, I attempted to deduce why I had accrued so much "stuff" in my life. I also wondered why I was so over-committed to an abundance of "things?" Had I bought into society's dictate for affluenza and "stuff?" Seriously, I thought, do I need all the clutter and busyness, or do I want just to say that I have this, and I have that and that I do this and I do that...whatever "this and that" is! More
