Work, Kids, Life, Partner, Parents, Hobbies, Volunteer, Friends, Etc. Etc. Etc... Repeat. Do you ever feel like you are being pulled in infinite directions? All those pulling demand their needs are the most important needs that need to be met. You are at the center of a wheel with hundreds of spokes circling 360 degrees around you. Each spoke is a balance beam and if you run too far to the end to fulfill the needs on one end, then the other end of the beam goes flying up in the air tossing something important wildly into the air. Business coach and author Alan Adams shares his step-by-step protocol for establishing what's important to you and your clinic and how to build upon your success. Take from and shared: It's natural to compare yourself to others, particularly in such a niche market like aesthetics. Sometimes it can feel like your competitors are doing so much better than you, all while making things look so easy, with a big list of happy patients and a growing bottom line. More

Note from the Editor: As a practicing nurse in plastic surgery, we have patient's in our practices that will remain in our hearts and mind forever. Many of us have therapies that we refer patients to, and journal writing is a type of therapy for our patients. Michelle is a co worker and survivor. This is her story. Her written story has been a therapeutic release for her and insight to others. Seek out different therapies for your patients, trust me this is a release that medicine cannot touch.~ Kathy Mortl

And just like that I am a patient, my mind went from caring for people to how will I be taken... More

I hope you were able to attend our recent meeting in Chicago. It was an information packed few days. We had a wide range of aesthetic and reconstructive topics. In fact, there were so many good topics that it was impossible to attend everything that I wanted to see. I would like to thank the volunteers of the Scientific Session Planning Committee for their hard work and dedication to ISPAN. Attending the meeting is a great way to get your continuing education to maintain CPSN and CANS certification as well see old friends and meet new ones. This year we will be meeting in sunny San Diego at the Hard Rock Hotel. If you’ve ever thought about speaking now is the time to submit your abstract. Otherwise, plan to join us for new ideas and fresh perspectives, in a fun environment. I hope to see you there!

"Leadership is a choice and should not be taken lightly" (Brennan, 2016). "Leadership is less about your needs, and more about the needs of the people and the organization you are leading. Leadership styles should be adapted to the particular demands of the situation, the particular requirements of the people involved and the particular challenges facing the organization" (Murray, 2015). "When you stop learning, you stop leading" (Kruse, 2012). These are all amazing quotes that reflect how we feel at the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses organization about your leadership as nurses. More

Medical missions are a great way to travel and to give back to society. It's a win-win for all. It is an opportunity to travel abroad, work alongside local medical professionals and exchangeknowledge and cultural experiences. The goal of the medical missions is to provide support andcare to people in countries where health care is limited. Patients travel from local regions toreceive life changing care that will bring substantial change and a chance for a brighter future. More

Cannulas not Just for Safety. We as practitioners are always looking at what we can do to give our patients the best treatments with keeping our patients' safety in mind. We as practitioners are always looking at what we can do to give our patients the best treatments with keeping our patients' safety in mind. We have long known Cannulas have decreased the events of vascular occlusions and some bruising. However Some health care providers feel like they do not get as much precision with cannulas, but in actuality Studies have found that tis not necessarily true. A paper written by Jani A. J. van Loghem, MD; Dalvi Humzah, MD, FRCS (Plast); and Martina Kerscher, MD, PhD - Cannula Versus Sharp Needle for Placement of Soft Tissue Fillers: An Observational Cadaver Study Showed That "cannulae showed more precision in placement of product. In a society that currently seems to have no civility, respect, or decorum, Cultural Humility is growing more ubiquitous every day. Cultural Humility is a lifelong attitude and approach to cultural competence. It is an appreciation and knowledge of other cultures and language. Cultural competence is not only knowledge of other cultures and language, but in the nursing environment, that knowledge would translate into empathy, sincerity, and charisma. In the present day politically charged world, professional plastic and aesthetic nurses should be cognizant of and humble in their own self-awareness towards their patients' beliefs and values and engage in daily self-reflection. Study Hard, but Study Smarter

In order to help you prepare and breeze through the study/review time needed, it is highly recommended that you purchase a copy of the: Core Curriculum for Plastic Surgical Nursing, 4th edition and/or the CANS Review Course Video (for experienced aesthetic nurses or a great introduction for those nurses who want to be). Both study guides are available to download:
