International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses

Kathleen Mortl, RN, CPSN

I would like for all you to know that we, as a Board, are very approachable via e-mail or phone and in person. Why, am I bringing this up you ask? Due to the fact that plastic surgical nursing is a diverse multidisciplinary field that encompasses various practice settings and educational backgrounds. Plastic surgical nursing begins at the start of life and ends at the end of life and one nurse doesn't know all. That is why your peers, nurse educators, PA's, APN, ST's, and LPN's, surgeons, nurse injectors, and estheticians are so important and can depend on ISPAN as a whole. We are a strong group with many goals and opportunities to enhance your practice by offering continuing education, educational events, symposiums, conferences, chapters, journals and two National Certifications. So with that said, I would like to open up the Newsletter for questions/answers or as a way to start an e-mail chain amongst us.

The main reason why I am doing this is that I attended the Aesthetic Symposium in May, met many new peers, gained many pearls of wisdom, and filed everything in my notebook/head for later use. And as I received a call this week from the "Assistant Biological Safety Officer Alternate Responsible Official Environmental Health and Safety" (WOW that's a title) I realized just how important networking is. She contacted me regarding the preparation of Cosmetic and Therapeutic Botox in our clinics. She and I discussed how we prepare for use. She asked for the MSDS. I gave her a copy. She stated "you might need the BSC". A biosafety cabinet? The hooded vacuumed cabinet in a spa and exam room, I thought? I never heard of this before... but then I remembered, we discussed this at a round table in May. I was so happy I remembered the discussion, but I couldn't remember the conclusion. Luckily, I had asked for everyone's e-mail and put their addresses in my rolodex. I sent out an e-mail with the simple question. Within 1 hour I had 2 responses. Amazing! Now, I would like to offer this same connection for those of you who may not have access to a rolodex of this nature.

We need to network with each other. Embrace the new members and dissect the established members. We have a stable, strong, foundation in ISPAN. We need to reach out to each other to maintain and build our foundation of care - stronger. We need the public to understand that is not a doctor’s stethoscope around our necks. Please contact me if you would like to start an e-mail chain
