October is nearly upon us. I have begun to consider October the beginning of the holiday season, kicking off with multiple events promoting breast cancer awareness. Pink is everywhere! One of my favorite events is Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day.
BRA Day was started in 2011 by Dr. Mitchell Brown from Toronto. Since then the event has grown tremendously and is celebrated in over 30 countries. Many women are not offered breast reconstruction following lumpectomy or mastectomy and this event was started to promote awareness of the many options available.
My institution puts on a Ladies Night Out event on BRA Day each year. The date this year is October 21. We have local vendors selling products that cater to women, hors d'oeuvres, representatives from medial oncology, radiation oncology, breast imaging, general surgery, and plastic surgery. We have gifts for the first 50 arrivals, the survivors, and all women wearing pink. It’s so much fun to see the crazy outfits. We have over 200 women attend each year. Uninsured women can also have mammograms for $99.
Some of the other event are a fundraiser at a local winery, a bra decorating contest, and a fun run. I'm also looking forward to decorating a bra for ISPAN. Does your office have any events? If so I'd love to hear about them: Kristi.email@example.com.
