International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses

We are counting the days until our 40th Annual Convention in Chicago! The Board of Directors along with the Scientific Sessions Planning Committee look forward to welcoming those that are able to celebrate this anniversary meeting with us. If you aren't able to attend, we are curious to know the reason.

Chicago fun fact:
Did you know that Chicago River is the only river in the world that flows backward?

Haley Wood, RN, WHNP, CPSN, CANS

The search is on.

Ring. Ring. "Good afternoon, Cool Springs Plastic Surgery, how may I help you?"

"Hi, do you offer Voluma?"

"Yes ma'am, we do. In fact, our nurse injectors have been using this product since December. We have had very happy patients with this product. Have you had Voluma?"

Chicago fun fact:
Did you know that the first blood bank in the United States was created in Chicago in 1937?

ISPAN: 40 Years Strong

Linda Duffy, RN, CPSN, CPN

Congratulations to the 1100 plus nurses strong on reaching our 40th year since the establishment of ISPAN. We should all take a moment this year to reflect on our past and take pride in our society. What better way than to attend the convention this year, meet new colleagues and share with one another our common interests. It's not too late to grab a colleague and hop on a last minute flight to Chicago. Fly into O'Hare, jump on the blue train line downtown and walk a few blocks to the convention. After the convention, stay a few days in my hometown and explore Chicago!

Once again this year, I am delighted in the pediatric sessions being offered: Craniosynostosis, prenatal counseling of craniofacial anomalies and a personal story from a medical mission to repair craniofacial defects. This story will also be highlighted in the next PSN journal.

Please contact me with any questions on navigating around Chicago!

Chicago fun fact:
Q; What fashion "staple" was invented in Chicago? A: The zipper!

Kathleen Mortl RN, CPSN

Let me tell you a funny eye opening story, which is true. The story is about a 47 year old married mother of two, who has been working as a nurse for the past 20 plus years. She has now reached a time in her life in which she has decided to better herself, and go back to school to complete BSN to Masters.

Chicago fun fact:
Q: What four states are visible from the top of the Willis Tower?
A: Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin!

PSNCB Corner!

The Plastic Surgical Nurses Certification Board held its first exam in 1990, 14 years ago! We will celebrate our 25th Anniversary of the CPSN exam next year. To mark this milestone, the PSNCB is moving ahead with the process of accrediting our exams through the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS). This is an extensive process that can take up to 18 months and we are excited to complete our first step in Chicago prior to the ISPAN National Convention.

We are looking forward to sharing in this accomplishment with our CPSNs and CANs in the coming year! If you have any questions, please contact the PSNCB Office.

Chicago fun fact:
Did you know in 1893, the first open heart surgery in the United States was performed in Chicago?

Suzanne Ramsey, RN, BSN, CPSN, CANS

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) statistics for 2013 are complete. The ASAPS has gathered data annually since 1997 from board-certified physicians. Tracy Hotter, RN, BSc, CPSN, CANS relate the following statistics in the April-June Plastic Surgery Nursing Journal: In 2013, there were approximately 11 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. This is an increase of 12% in one year. Non-surgical procedures accounted for 83.5%, whereas surgical procedures were 16.5%. Although the latter is a significantly smaller percentage, surgical procedures account for 58% of the total expenditures.

Chicago fun fact:
Q: What favorite American dessert cake was invented in Chicago? A: The Twinkie!

As a National Society, the ISPAN realizes that it is not always possible to travel to either our National Convention in the fall or the Aesthetic Symposium in the spring. However, two of the guiding principles of the ISPAN are to bring Plastic Surgical Nurses together to achieve the common goals of education as well as networking. Regional Chapters have long been the answer to this as it allows a group of nurses in an area to come together and share ideas and often times hold a small 1-day meeting for continuing education credit –something we are all looking for!
