International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses

Our National Conference is fast approaching. This year's focus in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of ISPAN is celebrating you, our entire membership. Yes, each and every member. A celebration is a joyful occasion and each of us should use this as an opportunity to reflect on our organization's history and reward and congratulate our members, leaders, committee members and our national office staff and their contributions to the longstanding success of ISPAN. We must also remember to recognize those founding members and leaders who had a vision and pursued that vision and made the ISPAN reality. More

The term "biofilm" has become more popular over the last fifteen years with the advent of artificial devices. Medical disciplines, outside of plastic surgery, have investigated biofilm formation with artificial cardiac valves, intrauterine devices, catheterization and dental procedures but today, we are seeing more research in dermatology and plastic surgery because of implantable devices such as breast implants, facial implants and dermal fillers. As your Treasurer, I feel it is my responsibility to provide you with an update not only on our finances, but also to provide more information on where your dollars are going. ISPAN members receive a number of tangible and non-tangible membership benefits. But do you really know where your annual dues go to? More

Kathleen Mortl RN, CPSN

I have been a nurse since the early 80's and I have seen many stories of life. I have seen the surgeries, which I screamed to myself please help him but it was an open and closed case, some one's Grandma die on the table which made me run to my grandparents' house and let them know I love them. In my twenties and 30's I thought this would never happen to my close family or friends. More

Linda Duffy, RN, CPSN, CPN

Summertime is the best time of the year for most children and adolescents. Engaging in outdoor activities from swimming to biking to riding ATV's can result in devastating outcomes without proper instructions. Injury prevention needs to be taught at an early age and reinforced routinely. Most childhood injuries do not require trips to the ER but having access to treatment at a pediatric trauma center may save a child's life. More

Susan lamp, BSN, RN, CPSN
PSNCB Director

As a member of the PSNCB Board, one of my duties is to review packets for certification renewal. I remember the first couple times that I had to renew my own certification. I had some questions and concerns about the application process. As the years have rolled by and I have 5 renewals under my belt, I thought it may be helpful to answer some frequently asked questions as well as provide a couple of suggestions for the applicants who will be submitting renewal of either the CPSN or CANS certifications in the future. The Plastic Surgical Nurses Certification Board is embarking on an exciting endeavor: Accreditation of our certification exams. The PSNCB will submit an application to the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) to accredit the CPSN and CANS exams. This is an extensive process and will take up to 18 months to complete for the CPSN followed by the CANS exam. More

As a National Society, the ISPAN realizes that it is not always possible to travel to either our National Convention in the fall or the Aesthetic Symposium in the spring. However, two of the guiding principles of the ISPAN are to bring Plastic Surgical Nurses together to achieve the common goals of education as well as networking. Regional Chapters have long been the answer to this as it allows a group of nurses in an area to come together and share ideas and often times hold a small 1-day meeting for continuing education credit –something we are all looking for!
