I hope everyone is enjoying the summer which seems to be flying by, I have been fortunate to take a summer vacation to spend time water skiing, fishing, boating and just kicking back and relaxing. It has been great! But, now back to business, the board took a month off; meaning we did not have a conference call in July, so there is not any news from the board, however I would like to take this time to review some issues. In the past week, I have been reminded of the important task many of us have during our daily conversations with our patients. I receive several calls daily from patients. Their calls can bring a myriad of questions about their surgery, concerns with something they are experiencing or requesting a prescription renewal. Many of these calls can seem routine, but occasionally this seemingly typical call can be more than the usual. More

A woman's decision to undergo a breast reconstruction after mastectomy is a personal one and may involve several factors. Through patient education and support, the plastic surgery nurse can play a vital role in facilitating the decision making process. I work with a plastic surgeon that specializes in breast reconstruction. In this article I will share some of my insights and recommendations for providing that education and support. More

Experiencing an adverse event from a neurotoxin or dermal filler injection is not only a scary situation, it is also reportable. To whom is it reportable? Good question. It is voluntarily reportable to the product or drug manufacturer and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). By law, health care professionals and patients are not required to report adverse events to the FDA; however, if the adverse event is reported to the product or drug manufacturer, that manufacturer is then required to report the event to the FDA. Postmarket Drug Safety Information is available on the FDA's website, More

Dear Readers,

I have had so many questions addressing the 38th Annual Convention to be held in New Orleans this October 26-29th that I have decided to run a FAQ column. I hope this answers all your questions and helps you to answer the questions of other attendees. See you in New Orleans! More

ISPAN is looking for individuals who exemplify commitment, compassion, innovation, and dedication to their chosen field of plastic surgical nursing. Has someone in your practice arena offered a significant contribution to the care of patients? Has he/she thought of an innovative solution to a problem that has plagued your practice setting? Did the compassion or commitment given to a particular patient really make a difference in that patient’s care experience? More
