We know that when spring arrives, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and floods are real possibilities. This was clearly evident with the recent storms and tornadoes that passed across the Plains where the unsettled spring weather brought forth astonishing tragedy to Oklahoma. As we did when Super Storm Sandy affected our peers on the East Coast, we would like to express our deepest concern and hope for our Oklahoma colleagues and their families. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of recovery and restoration.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful spring now that it is finally here and long overdue if I say so myself. Spring marks the season for the Aesthetic Symposium. The 10th Annual Aesthetic Symposium was held in April in New York City and was well attended. Thank you to my committee members, Barby Weber and Tracey Hotta. Both were instrumental in the planning and success of this meeting. Highlights of the meeting included the Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) Pilot Exam that was given on two separate occasions during the meeting. Overall, comments regarding the exam were positive. More

If learning the core fundamentals of facial anatomy are a priority, you will want to attend the 2013 ISPAN National Convention in San Diego, October 11-14th.
This year, we have two robust anatomy opportunities. On Friday, October 11th (afternoon session) a Live Cadaver Dissection Workshop will take place. Merz has graciously given ISPAN a generous grant for a 4 hour workshop headed by the renowned, Dr. Al Aly, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and Director of Aesthetics at UC Irvine. More

Several years ago, Brenda Wilkerson, past president of ISPAN and former editor of ASPSNews included an article that discussed how to prepare a Disaster Survival Kit. I found this article to have valuable information, so I cut the article out and stowed it away in my kitchen file of "important information". Over the years, I have pulled that article out and perused the list to remind myself what I should have on hand as we prepare to enter the spring severe weather season. More

If you love the sun but hate burning, you are like everybody else who enjoys a sunny beach vacation. Although burning can be a nuisance with the blistering, stinging, itching, and pealing, the dangers of skin cancer that lurk years down the road are really what should be your concern. Patients want to know how to protect themselves and their families. With all the updates and revisions to sunscreen, how do you know what is the best advice to give. Sunny summer days are officially upon us so what can you do to not only protect your patients but protect you. More

I once had an old gray haired retiring Plastic Surgeon ask me where I obtained my certification. He asked, "From a mail order service out of a magazine?" Instead of getting angry, I seized this golden opportunity to explain to him the process of qualifying and maintaining my CPSN. He was impressed, just as I am every time I see another nurse accept the challenge of becoming BOARD CERTIFIED.
Dear Miss Adventures,
I made a terrible mistake at work. I am lucky no patient was harmed, but something needs to change so this never happens again. It was a close call.
I was walking through a hallway in the operating room and suddenly a "Code Blue" alert was sent out of a room as I passed by. I ran into the room and saw a doctor doing chest compressions on a patient while another doctor was calling out orders. I asked the nurses how I could help and they handed me a blood sample for "ABG"s (arterial blood gas) and asked that I label it and send it to the STAT lab.
