Position Statement on Scope of Practice For The Plastic and Aesthetic Registered Nurse And Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
The International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN) strongly supports health care professionals practicing within established scopes of practice. “Scope of practice” refers to the care that a licensed professional is permitted to provide based on educational preparation, training, and demonstration of competence (American Nurses Association (ANA), 2020). Competence is considered fundamental to a safe clinical practice; the term “competence” encompasses the values, attitudes, abilities, knowledge, and skills that positively contribute to a nurse’s practice (Gillespie et al., 2018). Center for Nursing Education & Testing Update
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Center for Nursing Education and Testing (CNET) is transitioning both the CPSN and CANS examinations to a computer-based testing format. Due to the complexities of this task, this will not be finalized until early 2021. As a result of this, CNET will not offer CPSN or CANS examinations in the fall of 2020.
If you applied to take the spring exam, and your application was pushed to the fall examination dates, or if you have already applied for the fall examinations, CNET will carry your application forward to the 2021 examinations.
As additional information is received, both the ISPAN and PSNCB websites will be continually updated accordingly.

The International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN) recognizes that risk for infection is a concern for all healthcare providers, including those in the aesthetic industry (Hotta, 2018). There is currently an outbreak of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) that has been classified as a global “pandemic” by the World Health Organization (American Nurses Association (ANA), 2020; Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 2020b; Ghebreyesus, 2020). This pandemic has necessitated many adjustments to plastic and aesthetic nursing practices; in some instances, this has meant a complete halt to direct patient care in order to minimize the transmission of disease and reduce mortality and morbidity (ISPAN, 2020). As plastic and aesthetic nurses continue to consider the “key goals for the U.S. healthcare system” throughout this pandemic, they must review current evidence and consider how they will adjust their practices to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the community while also preserving the functioning of the healthcare system (ANA, 2020; CDC, 2020b).
