International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN)

Gerrie Obi, MSN, ARNP, RN, CPSN, ISPAN – F
President-Elect

My goodness how times have changed over the past 35++ years of being involved in the field of medicine and specifically, Plastic Surgery. Back in the early 1980s, advertising for medical procedures was not even heard of, except maybe in the Yellow Pages. Fast forward to today and you can find ads for a plethora of medical procedures, especially those involving aesthetic treatments and surgeries. According to We Are Social Ltd. (2019) 30% of daily time spent online by individuals is focused around social media. This trend has led to a change in the marketing game and it doesn’t and is projected to only continue to increase in the future (We Are Social 2019). More

ISPAN, Executive Director

A Message from Your Executive Director A warm spring hello to all of our ISPAN members! Spring is always a wonderful time for us to reflect on new beginnings and renewals. It's always a pleasure for our team to work with the ISPAN Board of Directors, Committees and Liaisons on our Society newsletter. For this issue, we also wanted to begin a feature where part of your ISPAN Staff Team has the opportunity to update the membership on ISPAN developments and programs. I am starting this with an introduction to our ISPAN Team - the many wonderful people here at the staff offices who serve our members on a daily basis. More

Healthcare
Healthcare is in a strange place right now. Hospitals are being bought by corporations and turned into huge systems. Insurance companies dictate the medications and treatments that patients can have. Talking about burnout is all the rage. I'm all for change and innovation and improvement but I'm not sure having profit be the main focus of hospitals and insurance dictating treatments are the way to go. Yes, burnout is a thing. It's a bad thing, and it's all around. I think that talking about it constantly without any real solutions being offered is helping, and may make it worse. Many of us are fortunate to work in private practice environments which aren't subject to the regulations of an academic institution but the effects of government regulation and electronic records are far reaching. I recently saw a job posting for an "EMR Nurse Practitioner". I am sad that much of what I do revolves around the EMR. I miss clinic and I miss patients. I feel burned out because I spend so much time on the phone in front of a computer screen. I wonder how much more of healthcare will be automated. I love academia and want to give my best to my patients. What do those of you in academic institutions do to cope with these issues?

PSNCB Corner Please prepare several months in advance for certification and re certification. Read Read Read the instructions and if you have any questions regarding the application process reach out to us. What is frustrating for both the member and reviewer are the applications that are missing content, non-Core Medical Director Letter, and downloading non-accredited contact hours. We spend hours going through each applicant's submissions and want everyone to succeed. Please be diligent and prepare. Now you can start early and submit a download when you achieve it - like record keeping! I love this! More

I am sure that many of you are familiar with the comments made by Washington State lawmaker, Sen. Maureen Walsh recently, regarding nurses "probably playing cards for a considerable amount of the day". The State Senator made the remarks on the Senate floor on April 16 in response to a proposed bill that would allow nurses to get mandatory uninterrupted meal and rest breaks. The backlash from the nursing community country wide was swift and fierce. An online petition was even started to ask Ms. Walsh to spend a day shadowing a nurse so she could gain a deeper understanding of what a typical nurse deals with in her day to day job. Many memes and viral videos regarding nurses playing cards popped up, but these comments were no joke to most of us. More

Polydioxanone (PDO) Thread lifting has been around since Cleopatra it rumored that she had gold threads placed in her face, but in modern times we are using non absorbable PDO thread. Contrary to what we used in the past the Non-absorbable thread such as the APTOS Threads and Polypropylene. Polypropylene threads are permanent non-absorbable threads. They were pulled from the market in 2007. We want threads that are absorbable and make collagen. There are many manufactures of PDO threads all over the world and many different types of PDO threads.
